 Material traces matter back to its origin. The works begin as something or
 dinary: a shell\, a spill\, a scrap\, a smear of soil\, a living culture. 
 Biomaterial researchers are constantly sourcing materials\, whether foragi
 ng\, nurturing\, or extracting. The act of sourcing becomes the act of mak
 ing. Each artist’s inquiry draws on cultural lineage\, personal experience
 \, and individual relationships. The works search beyond questions of usab
 ility and production\; they tell stories. This exhibition captures the mom
 ent an artist encounters a material and becomes inexplicably infatuated. I
 t glimpses under the veil of biology into a complex network of living cult
 ures\, waste streams\, memory\, and tools that alter perception. Source Ma
 terials exhibits 14 artists\, presenting biomaterial sculptures\, woven pi
 eces\, household objects\, film\, and transformed waste. While each work m
 ay propose a use or a new material\, they ultimately offer new perspective

 nspace Biomaterials Studio (GBS): The Biomaterials Studio is a community-d
 riven biomaterial research group at Genspace. We explore\, create\, and in
 novate at the intersection between materials\, biology\, and design. The G
 enspace Biomaterials Studio BioArtist Incubator supports artists who belie
 ve the materials we live with are worth reimagining. Each year\, select St
 udio members and invited guests engage in extended lab access and mentorsh
 ip to deepen their research into biological and regenerative materials. Th
 e Incubator culminates in an annual exhibition during NYC Climate Week\, w
 here artists share their work and invite broader conversations. About Gens
 pace: Genspace is the world’s first community biology lab — a place where 
 people of all backgrounds and identities can learn\, create\, and grow wit
 h the life sciences. Since 2009\, we have served the greater New York area
  by providing hands-on STEAM education programs for youth and adults\, cul
 tural and outreach events for the public\, and a membership program to sup
 port New York’s community of creatives\, researchers\, and entrepreneurs. 
 Our programs demystify scientific processes\, provide a platform for innov
 ation\, and cultivate the next generation of life sciences leaders in emer
 ging global technologies\, such as biotechnology\, neuroscience\, epidemio
